Covid Outbreak At San Diego Skilled Nursing Home Is The Worst In California

The Reo Vista Healthcare Center in the Paradise Hills area of San Diego is dealing with what data indicates is the largest coronavirus outbreak among nursing homes in the state of California.

Reo Vista posted a message on their website early Thursday evening that said more than 100 patients at their facility had tested positive for COVID-19, which was up 15 from the day prior. The new total is considerably higher than any other facility listed on the California Department of Public Health's Wednesday report.

While Reo Vista may currently be housing the most COVID-19 patients in its 135-bed facility, it has not exceeded the record number since the pandemic began, which occurred when 205 patients were diagnosed with the virus at a convalescent hospital in Los Angeles.

Reo Vista's management reports that it has taken every precaution to keep the virus from entering the facility and infecting patients and staff, including restricting access, screening staff, curtailing communal activities among residents, and requiring staff to follow all CDC infection protocols. The facility began routine testing in June and started seeing the number of cases rise on June 25.

The South Bay region of San Diego has been hit hard by the pandemic, with Chula VIsta hospitals reporting higher-than-average numbers of coronavirus-related emergency visits and hospital admissions. Of all the cities in San Diego County, Chula Vista has the second highest number of coronavirus cases, here are the top ten cities ranked by number of confirmed cases:

  1. San Diego - 8,090

  3. El Cajon - 910
  4. National City - 784
  5. Escondido - 725
  6. Spring Valley - 598
  7. Oceanside - 561
  8. Vista - 427
  9. San Marcos - 363
  10. La Mesa - 291
