As Hurricane Hilary Approaches, SDG&E Warns: “Be Prepared”

San Diego Gas & Electric and Emergency Services Officials warn that residents of the San Diego area should expect power outages as the County braces for heavy rains and high winds from the approaching Hurricane.

During a news conference today, SDG&E Chief Executive Officer Caroline Winn said, “Heavy rainfall, flash flooding and high winds have the potential to cause a significant number of unplanned and prolonged power outages to our grid.”

Executive Director at The City of San Diego’s Office of Emergency Services Chris Heiser said residents should “Be prepared,” and anticipate that power outages will come this weekend. “We’re telling you, this isn’t an if, it’s a when, and the when is this weekend,” Heiser stated.

The utility and emergency responders advise residents to make plans in case of emergency, Including:

  • "Fully charging your cell phones before the storm hits" and "having a battery-operated radio, so if the power does go out and you don’t have cell service or your cell phone battery dies, you’re still able to receive emergency alerts.”

In addition, SDG&E is providing a list of safety tips:

  • If you see a downed power line or damaged electrical equipment, always assume it is energized, stay away and call 911. If a person has come into contact with a power line, do not touch them. Call 911 and SDG&E at 800-411-7343 to report it
  • Secure any loose outdoor items like umbrellas, patio furniture and garbage bins to prevent them from flying away and damaging power lines
  • Drive safely on rain-slicked roads, as the number of cars hitting transformers or power poles increases. Be sure to slow down and allow more time for braking
  • Have a plan and kit with essential supplies. Keep a battery-operated radio and flashlights handy in case the power goes out. Check the batteries now to make sure the equipment works, and do not rely on candles for lighting during a power outage. Also make sure your cell phones are fully charged.
