Fatal Officer Involved Shooting in La Mesa

An apartment complex on University Avenue in La Mesa was shut down for hours on Sunday following an officer-involved shooting.

Police say just after 4 p.m., two La Mesa police officers stopped because they recognized a man with a felony warrant. When they went to contact him in the apartment's parking lot, police say that man produced a handgun.

At some point in that interaction between the officer and the subject with the felony warrant…an officer-involved shooting occurred. During that shooting, we’re still determining what rounds went where and doing ballistics testing. That’s something we’ll be working on the entire evening," said Lt. Steve Shebloski, SDPD Homicide Unit.

Lt. Shebloski says during the shooting, a stray bullet hit a nearby car: "That round impacted what appears to be a window. We have not processed that vehicle for evidence but we do know that the person inside the vehicle, thankfully, was not hit by a round."

Police say they believe the suspect was a 41-year-old man. The officer involved in the shooting was not injured.
