Strong Winter Storm Blasts San Diego

An unusually strong winter storm slammed into San Diego Tuesday night and early Wednesday with rainy, cold and windy weather expected into the weekend.

An unusual High Wind Warning for the coast was issued as part of a string of warnings and advisories across the county. Large rainfall amounts were expected to result from the severe system, along with 1-4 feet of snow in the county's mountains.

Wind gusts were recorded as high as 84 miles an hour in the San Diego County mountains late Tuesday night.

A large Torrey Pine toppled over near the Lodge next to the Torrey Pines golf course. Part of it landed in a swimming pool. There were no reports of injuries.

A large tree fell onto the side of a Bay Park apartment building early Wednesday morning, smashing into several units and crushing several parked vehicles. The incident was reported at around 5:11 a.m. at an apartment complex on Littlefield Street, near Morena Boulevard. One resident told reporting partner 10News that part of the tree pierced her apartment unit. In addition to the damage caused to vehicles and apartment units, some power lines came down when the tree fell over

The National Weather Service issued an Airport Weather Warning Tuesday evening due to the expected strong gusty winds through the day Wednesday.

San Diego International officials said they were closely monitoring the conditions, from the visibility to the speed of wind gusts, that would determine if they need to switch the direction of the runway. The airport was also working with each airline, making sure they secure their equipment so items wouldn't fly around onto the runway.
