Shooter Kills Man, Wounds Two Other People Including His Own Daughter

A man is in custody sheriff's deputies say he opened fire at a Fallbrook plant nursery killing one man and wounding two others, including his own daughter.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department says deputies responded to Atkins Nursery on Reche Road about 2:45m p.m. Friday. About 30 minutes later, deputies had a suspect in custody, according to Sheriff Kelly Martinez who talked to reporters at the scene.

Homicide detective Lt. Chris Steffen identified the man arrested as 76-year-old Enrique Barajas Gutierrez. Lt. Steffen says the man used a rifle to shoot and kill another man in his 50s in a barn on the property. Deputies found the suspect, along with the dead man's body, and took him into custody without incident.

The suspect and all three victims worked at the nursery in some capacity, according to the the homicide detective. One of the victims who was injured is Gutierrez's own daughter, who is in her late 30s.

The daughter and a man in his 70s were hospitalized with gunshot wounds to their torso but are expected to survive. Sheriff's detectives are investigating the motive for the shooting and they will be talking to the suspect's daughter and the man once they are able to at the hospital.
