School Test Scores Down in San Diego and Statewide

The newly released results of standardized testing shows declines in achievement in California public schools including San Diego Unfied.

The new report says about 47 percent of students who took state tests met or exceeded standards in English language arts, down four percentage points from 2019. Only one third of students did that in math which was down seven percentage points from 2019. California has not had such a low score for math since 2015, the year the state began using what are called Smarter Balanced exams.

In San Diego County, which usually has done better than the state averages, about 53 percent of public school students passed English language arts. That is down four percentage points from 2019. Just under 40 percent of county students met or exceeded the standards in math. That's down six percentage points from 2019 and is the county’s lowest pass rate since the beginning of the state’s current tests.

In the San Diego Unified School district, 53 percent of students passed English language arts and 41 percent passed math, down four and seven percentage points respectively from 2019. SD Unified released its results earlier.
