Man Shot by San Diego Police After Threatening Parents

A man armed with a gun was shot by police after threatening his elderly parents in the San Carlos neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

The San Diego Police Department says officers got a report shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday about a man in a house in the 6500 block of Bonnie View Drive acting suicidal and threatening his parents with a loaded firearm

During a media briefing Wednesday night, SDPD Captain Rich Freedman said the 60-year-old man was shot at least once inside the garage of the home. “As they (officers) approached the house, the male was inside an open garage. He had a firearm in his hand. He presented that firearm at the officers, prompting one officer to fire his weapon at least one time, striking the male,” Freedman said.

The man's parents, who Capt. Freedman said are in their late 80s to early 90s, called 911. Police arrived and developed a plan to take the man into custody with less-than-lethal force before approaching the home, but as they moved in the man came into the garage and pointed his gun at officers, Freedman said.

San Diego say at least one officer opened fire on the suspect. The man was taken to an area hospital and was listed in critical condition according to SDPD.
