San Diegan Scott Peterson Resentenced to Life in Prison for Wife's Murder

Scott Peterson, convicted in the 2002 killing of his wife and unborn child in Modesto, has been re-sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Peterson, who grew up in San Diego, has served more than 10 years on death row, but the California Supreme Court last year overturned his death sentence due to the improper screening of jurors for bias and then ruled that a lower court should determine where he gets a new trial. The court did not overturn his conviction saying that considerable circumstantial evidence did prove Peterson guilty.

Pat Harris, one of Peterson's defense attorneys, said his client had wanted to speak at the hearing Wednesday, but Superior Court Judge Anne-Christine Massullo did not allow it given that the sentence was preordained as the judge put it.

Peterson was convicted of first-degree murder in his wife Laci Peterson's death and second-degree murder in the death of their unborn son, who was to be named Connor. He was arrested in La Jolla near the Torrey Pines Golf Course in April of 2003, four months after his wife had gone missing.

Peterson attended University of San Diego High School and became one of the top junior golfers in San Diego.
