Driver Under Arrest in Crash That Left Three Dead

Three people were killed and six others were injured when a car plowed into a group of pedestrians near San Diego City College Monday morning.

It happened shortly after 9 a.m. in a tunnel underneath the college campus. Police say the car drove up onto a sidewalk often lined with homeless people in tents. Two of the six people injured were described as being in critical condition.

Police Chief David Nisleit says 71-year-old Craig Martin Voss of San Diego was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, injuring someone while committing a felony, and one count of driving while impaired by drugs. He remained jailed Monday evening in lieu of $1 million bail. Chief Nisleit says Voss tried to render aid to the victims. Police say Voss was headed west on B Street, west of 16th Street, about 9 a.m., when his Volvo veered right and plowed through people on the sidewalk.
