Suspect in Escondido Police Shooting Found Dead

Police say the suspect in the shooting of an Escondido police officer was found dead inside an apartment .

Officers discovered Anastasio Rosas Jr. dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a manhunt for several hours. Police responded to a domestic violence call shortly before 3 in the morning and were told a man left the scene with a high-powered rifle.

Officers confronted the suspect nearby and one of them suffered one gunshot wound and was reported in stable condition. The manhunt caused a major traffic problem in Escondido due to police having to close several major roads.

News Release from Escondido P-D:

February 22, 2021 at approximately 7:45 a.m., The Escondido Police Department and allied agencies received information that the suspect was seen in a vacant apartment in the 700 block of West Lincoln. Tactical units quickly responded to the area. While they were responding, the sound of a gunshot was heard from within the apartment. Tactical teams surrounded the apartment, and subsequent search of the apartment resulted in the location of a male believed to be Anastasio Rosas Jr. who appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators believe that Rosas was the only suspect being sought, and there is no further danger to the public.
