Governor Newsom got the attention of parents up and down the state of California when he said it.
The Governor saying it’s possible the start of the new school year could be as early as July instead of the usual August or September in usual school years.
But this year is anything but usual with schools having been “shut down” weeks ago with kids “shut in” at home trying to learn from a distance in a very unusual way.
So what will school look like in this unusual year?
A USA Today report describes the new typical day at school as being one where arrival, dismissal and recess happen on staggered schedules and through specific doors to promote physical distancing.
Students eat lunch at their desks which are spaced apart.
Some classrooms extend into unused gymnasiums auditoriums or libraries that are left vacant with schools putting on hold activities that cram lots of children together, with some learning still going on from home at times.
And of course there will be a lot of cleaning up, wiping down and washing hands. More than ever before.
One school consultant describing the things they have to think about as “overwhelming.”
Many parents of course are already overwhelmed.And while anxious to get their kids back in school, they’re also anxious about what it will be like for their kids.
Back to school shopping this year could be a little different, adding disinfectant wipes and maybe face masks to backpack supplies.
But there are signs that things will keep moving forward and we will get to a time when things are more normal.And normal sure sounds good these days.
