Banning Plastics in Imperial Beach, Now How About the Sewage?

When you think of Imperial Beach, what may come to mind are siestas, surfing and sewage.

IB is known for its relaxed atmosphere and attitude. It’s also known for its surfers and its sand. And unfortunately, its ocean is too often seen as a place where the sewage flows from Tijuana end up.

And now Imperial Beach will be known as the city with the toughest law against the use of plastic products.

The unanimous approval by its City Council this week has given the South Bay beach community what is being called possibly the most restrictive plastic ban in California.

In addition to disposable plastic bags, Imperial Beach also is banning the thicker reusable plastic bags like the kind you can buy for a dime when you’re checking out at the grocery store.

And it also completely bans plastic straws, plastic stirrers and plastic utensils.

With the Pacific Ocean so important to Imperial Beach, you can understand why IB would be a city that takes a very strong stand against the risks of plastics getting into the water along its beaches.

Now if the federal government could pass a law that finally fixes and prevents the sewage flows from Tijuana, Imperial Beach would be the kind of place it was always supposed to be.
