Giving Green Light to Changes in the Red Light District

If you take the 8 freeway to get to Liberty Station or Pt Loma and get off on the Rosecrance off ramp, then you know how backed up it can get.

And you know how long it can to get where you’re going because of it.  With the San Diego City Council on Monday approving a new plan for the area called the Midway District, things should get better in the coming years, and not just traffic improvements.

The plan will mean more residential development, and less industrial, and probably big changes where the old sports arena sits, emphasis on old, with either something else….or  an all new arena with an entertainment district.

The Midway District has needed improvements for a long time.  As City Council member Lori Zapf said this week, “It’s been an embarrassment because it’s been so blighted.”  And adds, “We can say goodbye to the red light district of yesteryear.”

And for decades, the area has had plenty of red light district businesses that date back to the days of the old Naval Training Center before the military closed it and Liberty Station came along.

Nothing has symbolized that red light reputation more than what you first see driving into the Midway District from the 8; the establishment known as Les Girls, with its gaudy and racy signage...

It turns out the Rock Church’s recent purchase of the adjacent Body Shop strip club may have been a sign of things to come.

Guess you might say the City Council’s approval of a new plan for the Midway District was an answer to prayers for something a lot better for San Diego.
