Some people could have been exposed to tuberculosis at the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District campuss in El Cajon and Rancho San Diego.
The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency is working with Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District officials to notify people who were possibly exposed to tuberculosis at the district’s El Cajon and Rancho San Diego campuses. The period of exposure was from January 30 to April 24.
“Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “But most people who are exposed do not develop the disease and TB can be treated and cured with medication.”
For individuals with symptoms of TB, or who are immune-compromised, it is important that the person sees their medical provider to rule out TB.
College staff will provide no-cost screening to identified students, faculty and staff starting on Tuesday, May 8 at the Student Health Services office in Bldg. 60 at Grossmont College located at 8800 Grossmont College Drive, El Cajon, and at the Health and Wellness Center in the I-Building at Cuyamaca College located at 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway, El Cajon.

The number of annual TB cases in San Diego County has decreased since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years. There were 258 cases reported in 2016 and 237 in 2017. There have been 52 cases so far in 2018.
